Toilet replacements go one of two ways: an easy afternoon (same position, modern soil pipe, standard pan connector) or a much bigger job (old cast-iron stack, moved position, or a wall-hung unit on a stud wall that needs a proper carrier frame). What a proper toilet replacement includes
We isolate the water at the cistern's isolator (or fit one if there isn't one), flush the tank empty, disconnect the pan connector and lift the old pan clear. We check the soil pipe for scale, wear or hairline cracks, fit a fresh pan connector suited to the new pan's outlet (P-trap or S-trap), secure the pan to the floor with the right fixings, level and connect the cistern, and finish with a bead of silicone at the pan / floor junction. Old unit taken away for recycling.

Close-coupled vs back-to-wall vs wall-hung
Close-coupled (cistern sat on the back of the pan) is the standard UK loo — cheapest to fit, easiest to service, £185–£295 labour. Back-to-wall (pan sits against a plinth, cistern hidden inside it) is neater but needs plumbing behind a removable panel — £295–£425 labour. Wall-hung (pan cantilevered off a frame in the wall, no floor contact) is the most premium look and best for cleaning underneath — £395–£650 labour and needs a Geberit or Grohe carrier frame set into a properly built stud wall.
When you can't just swap like-for-like
Old cast-iron soil pipes: sometimes the socket at the top of the stack is corroded and needs replacing — 30–60 minutes extra. Different outlet geometry (S-trap to P-trap or vice versa): a Multikwik adjustable connector fixes most, but sometimes the pan sits 20–40mm off where the old one was. Moved position: any relocation involves lifting floor to re-route the soil pipe with the correct fall — usually £250–£500 on top.
