Blocked Toilet — What to Do Right Now

A blocked toilet that still holds its water usually clears with a plunger or auger. If the level rises when you flush, stop before it overflows and let us get it moving.

Make it safe — before anything else

Never use boiling water

Ceramic pans crack under boiling water and porcelain-safe wax seals melt. Warm tap water only.

Skip the caustic 'unblocker'

Sodium-hydroxide crystals damage seals, chrome and skin. If the blockage doesn't clear, the caustic just sits there waiting for us — dangerous.

Gloves and ventilation

Disposable gloves, open a window. Waste water always carries bacteria.

Contain, don't hide

If it's already overflowed, towels around the base and photograph — insurance won't pay if you've cleaned before evidencing.

What Kevin (our AI) will check first

Message Kevin and he'll ask exactly these questions before we send an engineer, so we bring the right parts on the first van.

  • Are other toilets, sinks or showers backing up at the same time?
  • Anything unusual been flushed — wipes, sanitary items, kitchen roll, toys?
  • When you flush, does the level rise then drop slowly, or stay high?
  • Any gurgling from the shower or bath when you flush the toilet?
  • Is there a manhole cover in your garden or driveway you can check?

Common causes of a blocked toilet

  • Wipes and 'flushable' hygiene products

The number-one cause in UK homes. Nothing except loo roll should go down.

  • Excess loo roll

Thick 3-ply used in bulk raft-forms at the first bend of the WC branch. Cheap and quick to clear.

  • Foreign objects

Toys, phones, air-fresheners, dentures — usually needs WC lift-off to retrieve safely without pushing further.

  • Scale build-up in the trap

Hard-water scaling narrows the trap over decades. Once flow slows, blockages become weekly. Descale or replace.

  • Main drain blockage

If multiple fixtures back up, the WC isn't the problem — the shared drain is. Jetting from the manhole clears it.

Honest cost band — why we won't quote blind

Typical

£85 – £180 for a plunger / closet-auger clear

Complex

WC lift-off to retrieve a foreign object £180 – £320. External drain jetting £220 – £480.

A soft loo-roll blockage and a lodged phone look identical from a photo. £50 diagnostic gets you a written fixed price for the actual job.
