Cottam and the outer PR4/PR5 estates are the newer wave: sealed heating systems, plastic push-fit distribution and the recurring new-build gripe of buried filling loops, unlabelled isolators and undersized condensate routes. Water hardness at Preston sits at the higher end of Lancashire — hard enough to leave a visible ring on kettles and a light fur on shower heads, but not hard enough to warrant a softener in most three-bed homes.
