The Northwest isn't as hard-water as the South East, but Manchester, Rochdale, Bury, Bolton and Oldham all sit in the medium-hard band (170–280 ppm calcium carbonate). That's enough to scale up your shower heads, your kettle, your combi's heat exchanger, and to double the amount of soap you use.

Do you actually need a softener in the Northwest?
United Utilities publishes hardness data by postcode — check yours before you buy. If you're above 200 ppm and you have a combi (which is scaled by every litre it heats), a softener will pay for itself in 4–6 years just through descaling costs and boiler efficiency. If you're below 150 ppm, the case is weaker — a magnetic conditioner might be enough.

Twin-tank block-salt vs single-tank tablet-salt
Twin-tank meter-controlled softeners (Kinetico, Harvey, TwinTec) regenerate on demand based on your actual water use, not a timer. That means you never run out of soft water and you use 30% less salt. They cost more up front (£950–£1,650 fitted) but are the industry standard and last 15+ years. Single-tank timer-controlled softeners (BWT, Monarch) are £550–£850 fitted, adequate for a small household, but regenerate on a fixed cycle whether or not you need it.
