Halifax's plumbing character is defined by two things: gritstone construction and the Calder Valley floodplain. In Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd, the classic 'top-and-bottom' house is one stone shell containing two entirely separate dwellings on top of each other, each with its own front door on a different street level. That means two gas supplies, two water services, two sets of soil pipes — often intertwined in ways that only make sense when you've worked on them. The 2015 and 2020 Calder Valley floods left a legacy: incoming stopcocks under water for days, gas meters submerged, and cellar-mounted boilers ruined. We now routinely raise stopcock heights and specify appliance locations with flood clearance in mind. Higher up the valley in Todmorden and around Blackshaw Head, exposure is the enemy — condensate freeze, external tap bursts and boiler flue support on gritstone walls that need proper masonry fixings, not plastic plugs. Central Halifax (HX1, HX3) has more conventional Victorian terrace and 1930s semi stock, and Brighouse (HX3) and Elland (HX5) shade into more suburban 1960s–90s brick housing where the work is closer to what you'd see in Wakefield or Huddersfield's outer belt.
