Boiler kettling — why it's rumbling and what to do
Kettling — that low rumble or bubbling like a kettle on the boil — is limescale or sludge in the heat exchanger boiling pockets of water into steam. Left alone it damages the exchanger; caught early it's a flush job, not a replacement.
Make it safe — before anything else
Only Gas Safe registered engineers work on gas
Descaling, flushing and heat-exchanger checks are Gas Safe work. All KJ Plumbers gas engineers are Gas Safe registered — we'll show the card.
Turn heating off if it bangs loudly
A steady rumble is normal to run to a diagnostic. Loud banging or metallic clangs means shut the boiler down and call — that's steam pockets and it can damage the exchanger fast.
What Kevin (our AI) will check first
Message Kevin and he'll ask exactly these questions before we send an engineer, so we bring the right parts on the first van.
- Boiler make, model, age.
- How would you describe the noise — bubbling, rumbling, banging?
- When does it start — on ignition, after 5 minutes, only on hot water?
- Are any radiators cold at the bottom?
- When was the system last flushed? Any inhibitor added?
Common causes of a boiler kettling
Limescale in the heat exchanger (hard-water areas)
Combi boilers in hard-water postcodes coat the DHW plate with scale, restricting flow and causing kettling. Chemical descale £220 – £340; scale-reducer fitted from £140.
Magnetite sludge circulating from radiators
Rust from old radiators settles at the exchanger's hottest point, causing hot spots and rumbling. Powerflush £480 – £780 depending on radiator count.
Undersized or restricted flow
A partially closed valve or airlock reduces flow through the exchanger, letting water boil. Free rebalance during any diagnostic.
Failing pump
Weak circulation lets water sit and boil. Pump replacement £220 – £340 fitted.
Cracked or scaled heat exchanger
End-of-life fault; only replacement fixes it. £450 – £700+ fitted, or a strong case for boiler replacement if the boiler is 12+ years.
Honest cost band — why we won't quote blind
