Make it safe — before anything else
Isolate at the stopcock
The bathroom has multiple possible sources — shower, bath, WC, sink, hidden pipe. Killing the whole-house supply stops all of them at once.
Kill the bathroom circuit
Electric showers, extractor fans and shaver sockets in a flooded bathroom are a serious risk. Trip the bathroom circuit at the consumer unit before wading in.
Warn anyone downstairs

Bath / shower overflow
Blocked overflow while the taps are running (kids, pets, distraction) — accounts for a huge share of "floods".
Blocked WC overflowing
Blocked pan or blocked soil stack. Turn off the water via the isolator under the cistern and stop flushing.
Failed shower tray or wet-room seal
Long-standing silicone failure that finally lets water past the tray edge or below tile grout. Damage builds up for months before showing.
Burst supply pipe under the floor
Copper feed to bath, sink or WC fails and water tracks along the joists. Often shows first on the ceiling below, not in the bathroom itself.
Failed WC pan / cistern seal
