Blocked Macerator — What to Do Right Now
Macerators (Saniflo, Sanicompact and similar) are unforgiving — they only cope with loo paper and waste. Wipes, hygiene products and even thick 3-ply loo roll jam the impeller.
Make it safe — before anything else
Isolate electrically first
Fused spur off, or pull the fuse. A humming macerator with a jammed impeller can burn out — and it's a mains-powered unit sitting near waste water.
Do not open the lid yourself
The chamber can be pressurised with waste water. Removing the lid without draining first is messy and unsafe. Leave it to us.
Never pour drain-unblocker in
Caustic products destroy the internal seals and rubber diaphragms of every macerator on the market. Guaranteed to void warranty and often ruin the unit.
Contain waste, ventilate
Gloves, open window, disinfect the floor if any leaked. Keep pets and children out of the room until we've been.
What Kevin (our AI) will check first
Message Kevin and he'll ask exactly these questions before we send an engineer, so we bring the right parts on the first van.
- Make and model — Saniflo, Sanicompact, Sanibest, Sanivite, other?
- Age of the unit and how heavily used (household of 2 vs 6 makes a big difference)?
- Is it humming, silent, or repeatedly cycling on and off?
- Any smell of burning from the unit or the spur socket?
- Anything unusual recently flushed — wipes, sanitary items, kitchen roll?
Common causes of a blocked macerator
Wipes / sanitary items jammed on the impeller
The most common cause. Even 'flushable' wipes wrap around the impeller and stop rotation. Strip, clean, reassemble.
Scale build-up on the impeller and blades
Hard-water areas scale up the internals within 2 – 4 years. Descale annually with a manufacturer-approved product.
Membrane / pressure switch failure
The pressure-sensing membrane perishes and stops triggering the pump. Replacement part; usually a one-visit fix.
Non-return valve fail
Waste flows back into the chamber, so it cycles constantly. Valve replacement.
Motor / capacitor failure
Older units (7+ years) — capacitor fatigue causes the humming-but-not-spinning symptom. Sometimes worth repairing, sometimes worth replacing the whole unit.
Honest cost band — why we won't quote blind
Typical
£140 – £320 for a strip-and-clear, membrane swap or non-return valve
Complex
Full macerator replacement (like-for-like) £480 – £980 depending on model. Sanibest and larger units at the top end.
