Jammed Waste Disposal — What to Do Right Now
A humming waste disposal that won't spin has an impeller jam. A short list of things — bone, fruit stone, cutlery, elastic band — accounts for almost every call-out.
Make it safe — before anything else
Never put your hand in the chamber
Even fully isolated. Use tongs, needle-nose pliers or a wooden spoon to remove anything visible.
Isolate at the wall AND the plug
Unit switches can stick. Pull the plug from the socket too, or trip the circuit at the consumer unit if hard-wired.
Skip caustic drain-unblocker
Damages the internal seals and the plastic of the chamber. Guaranteed to void warranty and sometimes ruin the unit.
Watch for leaks from the base
A jam sometimes cracks the mounting flange. Look for a drip under the sink after every use.

Common causes of a jammed waste disposal
Impeller jam from bone / fruit stone
Most common cause. Turn the base hex back-and-forth to free; remove the object with tongs.
Cutlery down the chamber
Teaspoons are the classic — bend the impeller. Removal is easy; the impeller sometimes needs realigning or replacing.
Overheating / reset trip
Extended use with heavy waste trips the thermal overload. Wait 15 minutes, reset button back in, try again.
Motor bearing failure
Older units develop bearing wear — humming plus a grinding noise. Usually the whole unit is replaced, not repaired.
Cracked mounting flange / leaking gasket
Unit still works but leaks under the sink. Reseal or replace the mount flange — sometimes cheaper to swap the whole unit.
