A Nest install in a typical UK combi home takes 60-90 minutes and costs £260-£320 supplied and fitted. The 3rd gen Learning Thermostat is the one to buy — it supports OpenTherm on most modern combis, which is where the real gas-bill saving lives, not the app.
Google Nest is still the most popular smart thermostat we fit in the North West, mainly because it wires cleanly onto Y-Plan, S-Plan and combi setups, it plays nicely with Google Home, and — critically — the 3rd generation supports OpenTherm modulation on most modern combi boilers. That last point is what turns a nice-looking dial into a genuine efficiency upgrade.

Which Nest should you buy — Learning 3rd gen or Nest Thermostat E?
The 3rd gen Learning Thermostat is the one worth fitting. It has the stainless dial, it learns your schedule, it supports OpenTherm (via the Heat Link), and it's built to last. The cheaper Nest Thermostat E is fine as a straight schedule-based stat but it doesn't do OT and it doesn't handle hot water cylinders as neatly. If you have a system boiler with a cylinder, always go 3rd gen.
How does the Nest Heat Link wire in?
The Nest sits on the wall where your old programmable stat used to live. The Heat Link goes near the boiler (or at the wiring centre on Y-Plan and S-Plan). On a modern combi with OpenTherm, we run a 2-core cable from the Heat Link to the boiler's OT terminals and enable OT in the boiler's installer menu. On older combis with just a Live/Neutral/Switched-Live call for heat, we wire the Heat Link as a simple volt-free contact.
If you're moving from a wireless programmable stat (RF), we usually re-use the existing Live and Neutral at the boiler for the Heat Link power supply — no new cable runs needed.

Which boilers is Nest compatible with?
Nest 3rd gen supports OpenTherm on most Worcester Bosch (2000, 4000, 8000, Greenstar CDi), Vaillant EcoTec Plus, Ideal Logic Plus / Vogue Gen 2, Baxi 800 series, Viessmann Vitodens 100-W (B1KF), Alpha E-Tec Plus and Intergas HRE. On older or non-OT combis (Potterton Suprima, older Baxi Duo-tec, some Glow-worm) it wires in as a standard on/off stat — you still get the app and the scheduling, just not the modulation gains.
Will Nest still work with Google Home / Alexa / Apple?
Nest is a Google product, so it's native to Google Home and works flawlessly with Google Assistant. It works with Alexa via a skill (voice control, schedule reads). It does NOT natively support Apple HomeKit — if you're all-in on Apple, look at Tado, Netatmo or ecobee instead. We'll say so upfront.
What can go wrong with a DIY Nest fit?
The three most common we're called out to fix: OpenTherm wired to the wrong boiler terminals (kills OT on some models), Y-Plan wired without a wiring diagram (leaves hot water permanently on), and Heat Link installed the wrong side of an existing programmer (double-switching, boiler locks out on high limit). All fixable, but often cheaper to have us fit it properly first time.

Which brand should you fit?
We fit both the Nest Learning 3rd gen and Nest Thermostat E, but 9 times out of 10 we recommend the 3rd gen for the OpenTherm support and the tidier hot water handling. We can supply, or fit a Nest you've already bought. We install and service Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Viessmann and Alpha — none of them pay us commission and we don't push a "boiler of the month".
