Which smart thermostat should you actually fit?
The right choice depends on three things: does your boiler support OpenTherm, do you want geofencing/presence, and do you already live in an Apple, Google or Amazon ecosystem. A quick guide:
- Google Nest Learning (3rd gen): best all-rounder, supports OpenTherm on most modern combis, learns your schedule, works with Google Home
- Tado V3+ Wired: strongest at load compensation and multi-room TRV control, subscription unlocks the best features
- Hive Mini / Hive Heating: simplest for non-technical households, no OT (on/off only) — fine for older boilers
- Drayton Wiser: excellent value multi-zone system with OpenTherm, no subscription, made in the UK
- Honeywell Home T6/T9: robust wired option, good for renters replacing an existing wired stat
How long does the install take?
A straight swap (existing hard-wired programmable stat replaced with a smart one) is 45-60 minutes. If we need to run a new cable to the boiler for OpenTherm, or add a Heat Link near the boiler, budget 90-120 minutes. First-time WiFi and app pairing usually adds 10-15 minutes at the end while we test heating and hot water demand.
What is OpenTherm and why does it matter?
OpenTherm is a two-way communication protocol between the thermostat and the boiler. Instead of "heat on" / "heat off", the stat tells the boiler how hard to fire based on how far the room is from target. The boiler then modulates — often running for hours at a low output instead of cycling on and off. Modulating combis condense properly (return water below 55°C), which is where a modern boiler's efficiency claim actually lives.
If your boiler supports OT (most Worcester, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi and Viessmann combis from the last 8 years do) and your stat supports OT, always wire it that way. It's a two-wire connection to the boiler PCB and it costs nothing extra to enable.
Do you fit S-Plan and Y-Plan systems too?
Yes. A traditional Y-Plan (single mid-position valve, HW cylinder) or S-Plan (two zone valves) system needs a receiver near the wiring centre, not just a stat on the wall. Nest 3rd gen with Heat Link, Tado Wired Kit V3+ and Hive Heating multizone all handle this cleanly. Where a system has a cylinder we always add a hot-water schedule too — pointless heating your tank at 3am if no-one showers before 7.
Will a smart stat really save me money?
Realistically, 8-20% on your gas heating bill in a typical UK home, most of which comes from three things: OpenTherm modulation, aggressive scheduling (setback overnight and when the house is empty), and no more "leave the heating on all day just in case". The app is nice but it's not where the saving lives.
