Boiler Frozen Fault Code — What to Do Right Now
Modern combis go into safety lockout the moment they can't push condensate down the outside pipe. Nine times out of ten it's a code you can clear yourself in ten minutes with warm water and one reset.
Make it safe — before anything else
Only Gas Safe registered engineers work on gas
Safe DIY: reset button, thawing outside condensate, topping up pressure. Everything inside the boiler is Gas Safe registered only.
Don't reset repeatedly
Every reset attempts an ignition. Repeated failures dump unburnt gas into the combustion chamber — a real hazard.
Check the pressure gauge
Winter fault codes often coincide with a pressure drop from a slow leak on the heating side. Note the reading before you reset.
Vulnerable occupants — call early
Elderly relatives, babies, anyone unwell — don't wait for the second lockout. Message KJ for triage on video before it gets cold.
What Kevin (our AI) will check first
Message Kevin and he'll ask exactly these questions before we send an engineer, so we bring the right parts on the first van.
- Exact boiler make, model and fault code on the display.
- External condensate visible outside? Frost / ice at the elbow?
- System pressure reading on the front of the boiler.
- Age of the boiler and last service date.
- Any recent power cuts, DIY, or work on the outside brickwork?
Common causes of a boiler frozen fault code
Frozen condensate (most common)
EA / F28 / 1P / 133 / L1 style codes after a cold night. Thaw the outside pipe with warm water and reset once.
Low system pressure
Codes like Vaillant F22 / Worcester EA with low bar reading. Top-up loop pressure to 1.0–1.5 bar, watching the gauge.
Frozen external flue terminal
Rare but happens — snow blocks the flue outlet. Boiler shuts down safely; clear the snow, one reset.
Pump seized after long off period
Second-home / rental boilers idle for weeks then can't start the pump. Different fault codes per brand.
Fan or ignition electrode failure
Not weather related — but the cold snap is when you notice. Gas Safe callout.
Honest cost band — why we won't quote blind
Typical
Free advice — most winter fault codes clear with a DIY thaw and one reset
Complex
On-site diagnostic + reset + re-lag: £120 – £180. Component repair (fan, PCB, ignition lead) £180 – £460 quoted after diagnosis.
We'll always try to talk you through a safe reset before we bill a call-out. If it's a genuine component failure, £50 diagnostic gets you a fixed written price before we lift a spanner. Refund-if-not-fixed applies.
